“There is no wifi in the forest, but I promise you will get a better connection”

Increasing scientific research is demonstrating that the impact of healthy social relationships is highly significant to our physical, mental and emotional health. Studies have shown that in terms of mortality, good social connections as opposed to isolation and loneliness can have as much of an impact on life expectancy as smoking or not smoking! Positive interactions with others can have highly significant effects on our immune system, nervous system and overall health (not just by diminishing stress hormone release, though that is part of it). That’s why the CONNECTION Jigsaw Piece is so important in providing the nurturing environment for your cells’ health. Since it’s also true that negative interactions and ‘toxic’ relationships with others can have such a detrimental effect on our health, the initial focus must be on the relationship with the self, to both ensure optimal meeting of needs for the cells yet also to make sure that relationships with others embarked upon will be initiated from a healthy and self-loving starting point.

Some Questions:

  • Do you find it hard to put yourself first?

  • Do you notice a lot of ‘I should’s in your mindtalk?

  • Is it hard to factor ‘me time’ into your daily life?

  • Do you sometimes feel you don’t ‘deserve’ to be fully healthy?

  • Have a lot of people depended on you throughout your life?

  • If I ask you to think about the last time you had ‘fun’, is it difficult to remember?

If you've answered 'yes' to two or more of the questions above, then something you really need to work on to achieve more optimal health of body, mind and emotions, is the aspect of self-care and your attitude and behaviour towards yourself!

The primary relationship for all of us is with the self – there’s only one person with whom you’re going to spend your entire life – and that is you! So it’s really important that you get on with yourself, like your own company and know how to treat yourself well. This is surprisingly hard for many people!

The CONNECTION Jigsaw Piece is about re-connecting with your true self – remembering who you truly are and ensuring a relationship of self-love and optimum self-care, then being able to relate to others in a secure and positive way to continue self-love and extend that love and compassion out to others to enjoy mutually enlivening and healthful relationships and interactions with everyone you meet!

Just as you’re advised, in an aeroplane emergency, to ‘put your own oxygen mask on first’, before helping others, so, in life, we need to remember to ensure our own safety and personal energy management before giving away our energy to others. Many individuals in chronic low energy states have unconsciously (or consciously) learned to put others’ needs before their’s, ALL THE TIME, meaning that even when depleted in energy and other resources, it’s still others’ needs that are prioritised.

For sustainable, full recovery to good health, this has to change!

The first step is in becoming aware – aware of when you are giving away your energy when you’ve not really enough to do so… start noticing, every day! As time goes on, you can start to implement other steps (the path to true self-care usually takes a while for most dedicated ‘givers’ and ‘helpers’) (I know, because all this has been true for me too!) such as making your default answer ‘no’ rather than ‘yes’, monitoring and altering your self-talk – and starting to put into practice new behaviours of self-love and self-kindness…

Other ways to work on your CONNECTION Jigsaw Piece and improve your self care and relationships, include:

  • Self-Reflection: Internally answer some questions about yourself: How do you really see yourself? In your own life, in your family and community and in the world as a whole? How do you talk to yourself in your head? What language do you use? What do you feel is your role and worth in the world? Can you look directly in the mirror and say, ‘I love you!’ and mean it? If the answers to these questions imply that there may be room for improvement in the amount of self-love in your life, know that means there’s great potential for the improvement of health and life quality in you life!

  • Self-Love Practices: • Begin to practise acts of self-love, even if only small acts at first, such as making sure your bodily needs (hunger, thirst, hygiene, relaxation) are met on a daily basis. If this is a particular challenge for you, you may benefit from working with a professional in Accompaniment, to help you build self-worth and self-esteem, be comfortable practising self-love and thereby improve the energetic bodily environment for your cells.

  • Relationship Assessment: Assess your current relationships with others (friendships and acquaintances as well as family relationships and intimate partnerships). Which do you find enlivening and rewarding? Do you find any relationships draining or painful? Consider addressing any ‘unbalanced relationships’ to ensure self-love is being practised in addition to compassion towards others.

  • Up your Oxytocin! Engage in activities that will increase your oxytocin levels to create a calm, nurturing environment within your body for your cells to thrive. Activities include spending happy times with loved ones or pets, reliving positive memories (‘happy daydreaming’!) and hugging – enjoying comfortable physical touch.

  • Factor in the Fun:• What is fun for you? Explore what proportion of your time is spent doing what you ‘should’ or ‘must’ and (gradually if necessary), factor in more ‘fun’ or ‘relaxing’ or ‘enjoyable’ time in your life.
